One of the questions everyone wonder who is the fastest in the world of rugby? From legends like Lomu to todays Habana.
Who is the worlds the fastest, listed is each players time and there source. Lets get to the bottom of this popular question!
Note: Most of the times are not recorded recently which makes who is the fastest a large speculation game. There is more to rugby then just speed like acceleration, balance, vision, anticipation, instincts, endurance, psychology and many other elements.
#1 Fastest Rugby Player Toderai Chavanga
10.27 seconds 100m
400m Zimbabwe previous record holder.
Team: Springboks, South Africa
During the Super 14 last year i remember him out-pacing Rococoko and in the video Sivavatu gives up! Hope to see more of this guy, he still has along way to go to prove himself but holds great promise.
Videos:
- Sivavatu giving up, quite unbelievable. Sivavatu is as fast or if not faster then Rokocoko
- 6 try Debut for the springboks tho against Uruguay.

#2nd Fastest Rupeni Caucau (2nd Best Wing) FIJI

100m Unknown
Time is unknown but he is the fastest person my eyes have seen on the rugby field. Speed wasn’t his only attribute he showed up world class player and running through whole team like no one else. I rate Caucau the best winger better then Lomu its too bad we never saw his full potential.
My opinion definately the best player to grace the field better then Lomu.
Video:
- Instincts stopping BOD
- Rupeni running through France in the world cup
- Speed strength only Caucau would score
- Embarassing a wallaby and 3 defenders then toying with Tiquiri
- Embarassing wallaby Rathbone who runs 40m in 4.6 and Brumbies team in jogging mode.
- 3 tries vs Crusaders tearing them apart himself
#3 Brian Habana Springboks (Best winger currently)
10.4 seconds 100m

“Habana weighs 14 stone and is 5ft 11in but can bench-press 25 stone.” The best wing in the game at the moment.

“Running the 100m dash in 10.5 seconds and setting a high school record.”
Famous for burning Habana in the world cup it was amazing, he’s got a unique stepping style.
Video:
#5 Joe Rokocoko NZ All Blacks
10.66 100m
“he can run 40m in just 4.66 seconds! He’s even faster than his fellow team-mate and winger Doug Howlett, and he can run the 100m in 10.66!”
Source: BBC Sport
Rokocoko is featured in alot of videos on youtube.
Video:
#6 Doug Howlett NZ All Blacks
10.68 100m

William Ryder
Fastest player in Rugby Sevens for Fiji. He could be faster then Toderai Chavanga. Theres plenty more of him on youtube.
Videos:

- William Ryder Dancing With The Stars
- Fiji Vs Scotland – Ryder 1st try
- Fiji Vs Scotland – Ryder 2nd try

Jason Robinson, England
I’ve added a dedicated area for Jason Robinson he might not be the fastest over 100m. He’s definitely one of the most dangerous players in 40m and fastest over 10m allowing him to always beat his man.

Fastest: William Ryder (my opinion)
Jason Robinson, England

Caucau, Fiji
Who do you think’s the fastest? Have your say?
If you have any times with sources and speed of the players post it as a comment and i will add it on the web page.

Makidi above seems to know what he is talking about. Guys like Brent Russel ran 11.7 in high school (handtime) and he gives these so called 10 something people a good run for their times on the field. I would say a black man would be the fastest possibly Chavanga at his 10.57, i doubt a time too much below this can be achieved unless you a super 100m athlete and run for your country. The guy who said that Gerhard van der heever(bulls) runs a 10.2 needs to become less gullable. He probably did a 10.65 or 10.75 at best when he trained. 100m athletes like Morne Nagel of SA run best times of 10.25 and he is bladdy fast especially over 60m, he would have beaten Bolt over 40m and then got overtaken at about the 60m mark.
chavangha is faster than that..the dude runs at 10.2 or 10.3 not 10.27!
are u fucking stupid 10.27 is less than 10.3 hahahaha
This needs to be settled.
they should just do a sprint off like they did recently with the aussie sportsmen, Lachie Turner won ahead of Jarryd hayne and some other random guy.
New race, 100m sprint, current players:
Lelia Masaga
Bryan Habana
Tonderai Chavanga
Lachie Turner
Sitivini Sivivatu

Rupini!?¿!
Hes a disgrace to rugby and does not belong in an list of greats other than a great failures list.
@DAVE, bro its Rupeni..not Rupini!. First let me tell you something, go on youtube and see how this block runs the fields…brillant runner! second, don’t make a fool of yourself mocking someone you cannot compare yourself with. i suggest you jumb on the field with Rupeni and see how he will humble yourself! thirdly, try show respect bratha, how many mistakes have you done in your life, and have YOU ever played RUGBY?! dude i think you watch to much netball man!? it takes ONLY rugby players to regconise a wonderful tallent like RUPENI! Peace..I’m a French by the way! Watching this guy play our TOP 14 every week is just amazing…Peace!
NIgel Walker ran the 100m in 10.38. Ran 110m hurdles in the Olympics and scored 12 tries for wales. These guys above are quick but not that quick…
What about Warren McCann ranked 35 in the world men’s 200m 20.5 sec, 100m 10.10 sec! Now thats what I call a real athletes. Played Transvaal rugby 1988 – 1995!
wow that would make him the fastest over 200m, what a big fat lie. and also Jonah Lomu has the record for the fastest time over 100m for someone weighing over 100kg
lome was invisible and his name will be remembered over years.since he was invisible
wikipedia says that rico gear runs 100m in 10.3, now i never new he was fast but that is a very fast time
ugo monye does it 10.46 so this is wrong
All you gay sould think about Bjorn basson!!!
Thank you guys for this amazing site I found a better site for Rugby Video Games though http://rugbyvideogame.blogspot.com
Bob Lee – is 10.27 not somewhere between 10.2 and 10.3!!
Ugo Moyne is pretty nippy in the England Camp, but for verve and balance and running lines – Foden is up there for cutting the field up.
I just know that the Jonah Lomu is the legend…i am too playing the wing..:D

You lot are amazing. You just make up times or look at wikipeida. Try actually looking up real sources of information. There would be no rugby player in the world running under 10.5 seconds over 100m. None. Some people like Ngwenya made 10.5 in highschool athletics, but would be much slower now because of gained weight for rugby. Many of the times people are posting are quicker than their countries national sprinting record. The fastest New Zealander ever ran in 10.41 seconds for god sakes. Most of the times listed would make the Olympics. Stop being so ignorent and actually do a bit of research before you make up rubbish or quote wikipedia.
Chavanga is most likely to be the fastest and there is also Sireli Bobo of Fiji. Jongi Nokwe is also up there and Bjorn Basson
Sefo habana ran on a dirt road with trainers, not on tartan with spikes!
To bad they are all slower than gridiron players…
I thought nick was talking shit that our national record is only 10.41 seconds. But my one minute google investigation says this is true. Could it be? I find that hard to believe I went to school with guys that could crack 11. Professional athletes with all their training should be well advanced from that.
Chris Donaldson 10.17 in 2008. Perhaps Nick u should do some genuine reserch yourself mate!
there is a major difference in running with spikes and running in rugby boots. they probably only run about a 10.8 anyway, so the race should be done in boots on rugby field. research ypour times first chops
Sorry guys i trained with tonderai when I was in matric a ran a elecronic time of 10.6 tonderai only ran a 10.8 guys he is surely quick a great inspiration to all players oh by the way he ran in spikes on tartan and it was electronic guess others couldnt compete much
Brian Habana and Doug Howlett are ma fave playaz in rugby cuzz there
and doug always gets into scraps
and there are mean sukxx playas
caucau is da best..durin da 2003 everyone stood
up as he scored against scotland
what about zac guildford?
I think Tom Varndell England sevens squad is one of the fastest ever.
dwain chambers turned out for castleford tigers seconds ,his best time is 9.97
end of
Those times are pure speculation/guesswork. Not including the likes of Bolt, Powell etc, but other top 100m atheletes i.e Olympic semi-finalists get times around the 10.2 mark and often decent runners who can break 10 sec record low to mid 10s. And that is with years of specific sprint training, working on very specific sprinting techniques, strict diets, specific weights programs all aimed at improving their sprint times. So there isn’t any way that players like Chavanga and Habana are getting times in the low 10s. And handtiming doesn’t count, it’s very inaccurate. I would guess the quickest guys in rugby are capable of breaking 11 secs, but not much lower than 10.8s. To put it into perspective, there was a 100m race in Australia this year, with the ‘fastest men in football’ racing against each other – it had guys from union, nrl, soccer etc Usain Bolt was there as the special guest. The winner Lachi Turner won it in 11.2. Bryan Habana isn’t 1 sec quicker than that, period.
Rupeni Caucau to me is still the most davastating winger of all time, no one could match the tries he scored, id say his still fast, once he gets back to his best form..
Excellent goods from you, man. I have understand your stuff previous to and you’re just extremely great. I really like what you have acquired here, really like what you’re stating and the way in which you say it. You make it entertaining and you still care for to keep it sensible. I can not wait to read far more from you. This is actually a tremendous site.
fastest ever rugby player Michael Johnson
Being a current athlete and a past rugby player my self i love the site and banter but want to make a few things clear.
These guys in high school most likely weighed around 11-13 stone and trained for the event.
you put on 2 stone and train for just 40 meters and you speed endurance goes down the toilet.
Chavanga is most likely the quickest BUT i can not find him on the iaaf website, so when it comes to times you have to take with a pinch or salt, was it with a blistering tail wind?
caucau is my choice as the fastest i mean that guy even looked like a total sprinter he burned everyone for speed and made internationals look slow.
ngwenyas tme is high school and looks like a 10.5 but as i have said bulked up and no training you lose it very quickly.
ugo monye was a sprinter and when he was as light as a feather he was a 10.66 confirmed.
Varndells 10.80 was hand timed in trainers,
along with lomu.
rokococo was rapid but slowed after 60 meters, same as sivivatu.
How paul sacky got on here is amazing he was quick but come on! i used to run against this guy and would want to see a electric timed 100m.
nigel walker was confirmed as rapid but he put 2 stone on for rugby. even by his words he lost speed endurance but kept his 40meters up.
Nobody has mention the great fijians enough.
Vunibaka that guy was most likely low tens in the 100m and was stated as being one of the fastest players ever on the rugby field by nz sevens coach and josh lewsley.
Joeley vindiri to me sadly is a forgotten man, he was fijian sprint champian which says something big, and he was stated by auckland blues players back in 1997 that he was WAYYYYY faster than lomu and was 17 stone too, i know this because i asked the question to them directly to aidrian cashmore when the blues came over here to train in 1997ish.
Sadly he left fiji to join all blacks and at 27 got cut down with the same kidney condition as lomu, he was on the opposite wing in the blues team, i hate to say this but steroid abuse possible? who knows.
He only got 2 all black caps after 4 years transfer time.
also people dont get the 40meter time trial to sprint time.
The time starts when you cross the beam in time trials, in sprinting you have a gun and reaction time.
Sadly no mention of the carrot brothers who played for france and Baritzz (sorry for spelling)One was a french sprinter who was around 10.3 he played back in 1996
and The silver fox bernard salle.
and never never forget the awsome speed of christian cullen. when ihave a kid his name is cullen.
anyway just my thought and experiences, hope this helped
Other notes rugby league dwain chambers, and chariots offia.
Oh and another confirmed player is paul sampson who at 18 was 10.48 comfirmed as a english schools sprinter
keep seeing people stating this guy is low ten seconds, for god sake that is quick and people who train full time cant get that quick.
i dont think people quite understand how fast mid ten times are, trust me
hi!,I like your writing so much! proportion we communicate more about your post on AOL? I need a specialist in this area to solve my problem. May be that’s you! Taking a look forward to look you.
Jason robinson vs shane williams 100m sprint lets see who’s quicker
i dont see how you can rate rupeni higher than jonah, rupeni has scored some good trys but has done nothing compared too jonah. i got to see rupeni in full form when i was younger cause he played for our local club but he got beat on defense alot and got chased down by christian cullen when northland played wellington. umm you may need to redo your list guys like dan norton from england 7s is far faster and more explosive then robinson. i dont think new zealand has any super flyers at the moment most of the wingers are just well balanced with skill, speed , balance and flair to beat a man. likes of Dagg, Jane, Kahui, whos were the back 3 for the world cup scored some amazing trys without being the fastest back 3 in the tournement.
well i was a sprinter current rugby player i did 10.82sec weight at 75kg but when you put on rugby boots there is a big difference on the rugby field my time fell to 11.2 but on a rugby field 100m times means nothing if you are quick on lets say 30m to 50m that will make a difference. and habbana did a 10.8 on rugby boots but think shavanga will smoke him lomu would not of broke the 11sec barrier hes to heavy ngwenya only beat habbana because he already was on full pace and habbana had to pick up speed if he only had sprinted longer and not dived so soon he wuld of caught him.
the fastest ever?.. rupeni caucau..that guy was never even running at full
speed, just see a try he scored for agen against toulon, probably one of the few
times he ever runs at full speed but 3 wings you can put behind him in order is
chavangha, habana and varndell..these guys were super quick and ryder was probably the fastest over 40 metres but not 100. he would probably clock 10.8 in 100m and pesamino is definitely the fastest samoan international but the fastest samoan currently who is playing for the AB’s is Masaga who i believe can do under 10.5. caucau, if running at full speed could possibly clock 10 seconds flat and only other player that am close to caucau in his prime was marika vunibaka who could also do under 10.1 seconds in his early days
I doubt Masaga can do 10.5. Rocopops does around 10.60 and howletter 10.7 from memory. Soseni Anesi is the fastest out of them all with Joe admitting it.
Anesi was the fastest sevens player he’s by by NZ sevens coach tjetjin?, still doesn’t make him better then Howletter or Joe.
heyyy all of use just make shit up to try and talk the players up so the onlything is
just dont comment if use dont know.
and habana runs only under 11 seconds he even said it when he versed the cheetah in 100 metres. he runs 10.8 or 7s and that neguenwa guy runs 10.34
hhahahaha yeah yup..hez fast..he did wel in college..welldone Pesa..MAY GOD BLESS TO AL OF YOU GUYZ..the manu samoa sevens..
:o
doesnt anyone remember??? what bout stowers?? he ran off turner in the sevens final. yet turner won the aussies 100m race. hes got a NZ record in high school electronic time of 10.78s, i know this coz he went to my high school
